<p>Most Reformed commentators have tended to take Matthew 24, up to verse 38, as depicting first century events such as the initial spread of the Gospel, the persecution of the apostles and the destruction of the second temple. From verse 39 and thereafter though, the tendency has been to view it as concerned with the final judgement, the “tribulation” being understood as something beginning in the first century and coming to an end at the final coming of Christ. In this post, I will be examining Matthew 24:29-31 with the aim of showing that it is also concerned with first century events.</p>
<p>Verse 29 begins with a quotation from Isaiah 13:10 depicting the dissolution of the heavenly bodies:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“the sun will be darkened, </em><br />
<em>and the moon will not give its light, </em><br />
<em>and the stars will fall from heaven, </em><br />
<em>and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.” </em></p></blockquote>
<p>The wider context of the Isaiah passage is Yahweh’s destruction of the Babylonian empire by the hand of the Medes. Verse 10 in particular though is concerned with the heavenly dimension to this conquest, which is the overthrow of the gods of Babylon. Jesus likely has a similar emphasis in Matthew 24, the overthrowing of the gods of the nations, with the saints being enthroned in their place.</p>
<p>Verse 30 shows us the earthly dimension to this heavenly conquest. The tribes of the land of Israel mourning over their dead in fulfilment of Zechariah 12:10. There are also allusions to Daniel 7:13-14 in this verse, which is a reference to the ascension of Christ. The Jews in Jerusalem perceive in part the enthronement and vindication of Christ in the unfolding events of judgement. The verse as a whole could be read as follows:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“Then shall appear the sign of the son of man in heaven, </em><br />
<em>and then all the tribes of the land shall mourn, </em><br />
<em>and they shall perceive the son of man’s coming </em><br />
<em>on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”</em></p></blockquote>
<p>Verse 31 answers the problem of verse 29. After the gods of the nations have been dethroned, who will take their place? The answer is of course, the elect, the righteous in Christ who have died. They are gathered together by the angels into heaven to form a new heavenly council, to reign with Christ over the nations. All of which was fulfilled in the first century.</p>

<p style="line-height: 25px; font-size: 14pt;">The feet of the great statue in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream cannot be <em>interpreted</em> as a prediction of the states of modern Europe, but the lessons from their failure can certainly be <em>applied</em>.</p>
<p><span id="more-16184"></span>The statue in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream spoke of God’s ordaining of four empires which would rule in succession throughout Israel’s “latter days,” the half millennium from the exile to the Messiah. Like the Tabernacle, the metals of its construction progressed from the finest to the strongest, from the gold of the Sanctuary (Exodus 25:17-21; Psalm 19:10) to the iron of the unconverted nations (1 Samuel 13:19; 1 Chronicles 22:3).<a href="#footnote_plugin_reference_1" name="footnote_plugin_tooltip_1" id="footnote_plugin_tooltip_1" class="footnote_plugin_tooltip_text" onclick="footnote_expand_reference_container();"><sup>1</sup></a><span class="footnote_tooltip" id="footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_1">For more discussion, see James B. <p>The image was also humaniform like the Tabernacle, but being kingly rather than priestly it was not cruciform. The anatomical progression follows the threefold process of the foundation of mankind in Eden, where Adam was to image God <em>physically</em> (Genesis 1: being), <em>socially</em> (Genesis 2: knowing) and <em>ethically</em> (Genesis 3: doing). The Lord breathed into Adam’s <em>nostrils</em> (above) and cut into his <em>flesh</em> (beside). It was up to Adam to place his <em>foot</em> upon the neck of the serpent (below). As an effigy of glorified man, the description of this image also works from head to foot, from confession to dominion, from <em>word</em> (divine command) via <em>sacrament</em> (priestly obedience) to <em>government</em> (kingly authority).</p>

<blockquote><p>Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him… (Matthew 2:1-2)</p></blockquote>
<p style="line-height: 25px; font-size: 14pt;">The arrival of the wise men from the East signalled the beginning of the end for Old Covenant Israel. These men were influenced by the prophet Daniel, one of the Jewish captives who was taken to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar half a millennium earlier.</p>
<p><span id="more-15028"></span>Daniel and his friends were to be trained by the Chaldeans as wise men, but instead they challenged the power of the king and his wise men, just as Moses and Aaron had challenged Pharaoh and his magicians. Daniel not only trumped their skill but ended up ruling over the wise men. He had been taken captive to be taught, but rather than seeking their power, he humbled himself before God and became their teacher.</p>
<p>Daniel redeemed the wise men of the East from pagan astrology, a practice condemned by God because only He can interpret the stars, and He does so only to His prophets (Genesis 15:5; 22:17; 37:9, Deuteronomy 1:10; 4:19; 28:62, Judges 5:20; Isaiah 14:13; Jude 1:13; Revelation 1:16).</p>
<p>Daniel was such a prophet, and he led these Gentiles to the truth concerning the stars: They are signs of the sons of God, those destined to ascend and rule the heavens (Daniel 12:3-4). Instead of seeking wisdom from the created heavens, the wise men now understood that “there is a God in heaven” who reveals such secrets (Daniel 2:27-28).</p>
<p>Thanks to Daniel, the wise men who sought Jesus were not like the wise men who had served King Nebuchadnezzar:</p>
<blockquote><p>The Chaldeans answered the king and said, “There is not a man on earth who can meet the king’s demand, for no great and powerful king has asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or Chaldean. The thing that the king asks is difficult, and no one can show it to the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.” (Daniel 2:10-11)</p></blockquote>
<p>Now that they worshipped the God of heaven, He was not only pleased to speak to them in dreams as He did to Daniel, He was pleased to meet them in person, as a man on earth, a God who now dwelt in flesh.</p>

<p>Reliance upon rules and regulations is a sign of immaturity. There&#8217;s nothing wrong with them, of course, just as there is nothing wrong with the &#8220;gutter guards&#8221; used to keep the ten pin bowling ball moving towards the pins for children&#8217;s parties at the bowling alley. Likewise, there was nothing wrong with creeds, rosary beads or religious paintings in their early days. They were simply mnemonic devices for the illiterate. But, just as it was with the Pharisees in the first century, these lifeless, inflexible &#8220;stoicheia&#8221; become a problem when they turn into legislation and become mandatory. Failing to tithe one&#8217;s kitchen herbs leads to certain destruction. The celibacy of certain prominent men in the Bible is part of this discussion. The question is not &#8220;Is celibacy holier than marriage?&#8221; but why were these spiritual giants, including Jesus, celibate at all?</p>

<p>Why are there four Gospels? There would be so much less confusion &#8212; and theological spade work &#8212; if there were just the one. The least obvious answer is that God was not only writing the commandments in human flesh, He was also &#8220;measuring out&#8221; the architecture of the Tabernacle in humanity.</p>

Since the structure described has never been built, those who take the passage as fulfilled in history believe it to be figurative. However, the building is described in such careful detail that common sense suggests that something else is going on. The precise measurements remind us of the instructions given concerning the Tabernacle and Solomon&#8217;s Temple for the purpose of physical construction. Is Ezekiel&#8217;s temple a false prophecy, or does it describe a third, and as yet unbuilt, Temple in Jerusalem?</p>

<p> The book of Revelation is a mystery, yet like all good mysteries it is a book made entirely of clues. It is a glimpse through the torn veil of the Temple, that is, the flesh of Jesus, into the heavenlies. The cloud into which He was taken up is opened to John&#8217;s eyes that he might see the horses and chariots of God (2 Kings 6:17). But John is a prophet who knows the Bible, and like John we will only understand the symbols if we know the Bible. The conversation at God&#8217;s table is for those who know their Master&#8217;s mind, who hear His voice as children and thus quit themselves like men. To them, this is indeed a Revelation. To those outside His commission, it remains an enigma, terrible lightning and thunder and the sound of trumpets (Exodus 19:19; 20:18).</p>

<p>Jesus&#8217; reference to Daniel 7 in Matthew 26:64 (and Mark 14:62) is a source of some confusion. To figure out what is actually going on in Daniel&#8217;s vision, we have to go back to Leviticus 16. James Jordan writes:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8230;when Jesus calls Himself “the Son of Man,” He is referring to Ezekiel, not to Daniel 7 (except perhaps indirectly). Jesus is the Greater Ezekiel. Christians are those who are “like the Son of Man,” like Jesus.</p></blockquote>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">The Day of Coverings: Coming With Heavenly Clouds</h3>
<blockquote><p>Turning from Ezekiel, there is another passage in the Bible with which the Jews were very familiar, that is farther in the background of Daniel 7, and that is Leviticus 16. On the Day of Coverings (of “Atonement” in English Bibles), the High Priest took off his glorious garments and dressed simply in linen in order to remove the sins of the people once a year. Then, after finishing this work, he was reinvested with glory, and once again took up his position as spiritual ruler of Israel.</p>
<p>Two coverings happened on the Day of Coverings. First, the Ark-Cover was sprinkled and thereby covered with blood. This was a covering for propitiation, justification. Then the High Priest put back on his garments of glory and beauty. This was a covering for glorification.</p>
<p>Now, removing sins is not in view on Daniel 7, but other aspects of the ritual are. We have seen that Ezekiel was a kind of high priest, and it follows that in Ezekiel “son of man” is a title for the High Priest, the spiritual ruler of God’s people. Adam was priest in the Garden of Eden, and the “son of adam” is a new Adam, ruling in the symbolic sanctuary garden of the Tabernacle and Temple. Hence, “son of Adam” or “New Adam” is entirely appropriate as a title for the Chief Priest of God’s sanctuary.</p>
<p>An examination of the ritual in Leviticus 16 will clarify aspects of Daniel 7 for us, aspects that would have been much clearer to Daniel and his friends who “meditated on the law day and night” and who had observed this ritual annually before they were deported to Babylon.</p>
<p>The ritual is delineated in Leviticus 16. We read in verses 12–14 that the High Priest was to take coals from the fire of the Bronze Altar in the Courtyard. Then he was to fill the hollow of both his hands with incense, place it upon the coals, and carry this incense into the Holy of Holies directly before Ark-Throne of Yahweh. This incense was most holy, or “holy of holy” (Exodus 30:34–38). Its ingredients were prescribed by God and it was used only in the Tabernacle/Temple, which was a symbolic model of God’s heavens. The cloud of incense, thus, was a symbolic cloud of the heavens. Being “most holy” this incense could travel into the Most Holy room. [1]</p>
<p>As the High Priest walked from the Altar on the earth upwards (symbolically) through the heavens and into the highest heavens, he did so accompanied by this heavenly cloud. Inside the Holy of Holies, the High Priest held the incense pan in one hand, and a bowl of blood in his other hand, from which he flicked with his finger blood toward the Ark-Throne. This blood was to cover his sins and those of the other priests (Leviticus 16:11).</p>
<p>After this, as a second ritual, the High Priest did the same thing with a goat slain for the sins of the people, taking incense into the Holy of Holies and sprinkling the blood of the goat before the Ark-Throne (Leviticus 16:15).</p>
<p>After all the rituals were completed, the High Priest took off the garments he had been wearing, and put back on his garments of glory and beauty (Leviticus 16:23–24). These garments included the twelve tribes engraven on his shoulder stones and also on his twelve-stoned breastplate. In other words, the High Priest was given the kingdom on the Day of Coverings — he put the kingdom back on himself.</p>
<p>Now if we look back at Daniel 7:13–14, we see the same sequence. We see someone like Ezekiel, who was a kind of high priest for the exilic community. This High Priest approaches Yahweh with the clouds of heaven. Then he is given a kingdom that will never pass away.</p>
<p>We must remember that the High Priest represented the people. The High Priest is the son of man, and the people are those who are <em>like</em> this son of man. In Leviticus 16, the High Priest comes with heavenly incense clouds first for himself, and then he comes a second time for the people. Thus, there are two cloudy ascensions in Leviticus 16, the first of the son of man, and the second of those who are like the son of man.</p>
<p>In Daniel 7:13, the one like a son of man does not come riding <em>upon</em> heavenly clouds. He is not a cloud-rider. He is not a “divine figure.” No, he comes <em>with</em> heavenly clouds, and can be recognized as the High Priest, or rather, as those who are like the High Priest. In Daniel 7, the Ancient of Days, the Cloud-Rider, has already arrived.</p>
<p>We are not surprised, then, to read that the one like a son of man is identified not with any particular person, such as the coming Messiah, but with the saints (Daniel 7:18, 22, 25). Now, Daniel would not have been aware that the Messiah would be the incarnate Yahweh. Hence, he might well have seen the one like a son of man as the Messiah coming to Yahweh to receive the kingdom. That is, Daniel could have seen this figure as both the people and their Messianic head. At the same time, as we have seen, the clear allusions to Leviticus 16 might have complicated things for Daniel, because there are two ascensions, one of the son of man and one of the people of the son of man. We, however, cannot be confused. The Ancient of Days is Yahweh, and taking his seat must be the ascension of Jesus and the opening of the books seen in Revelation 4–7. The one like a son of man, like Jesus, is the saints, who ascend to receive the kingdom in the year AD 70.</p>
<p>For Christians today it is not so clear, because the background of Daniel 7 in Ezekiel and in Leviticus 16 is not well understood. They see Jesus ascending to heaven in the clouds (Acts 1:9) and they think that is all there is to it, forgetting the second cloudy ascension in Leviticus 16. But Leviticus 16 makes clear that first the High Priest ascends in a heavenly cloud, and then afterwards the people (represented by the goats and the High Priest) ascend.</p>
<p>Similarly, Christians have been too quick to read the various statements in the New Testament about the “son of man coming in/with clouds” to refer to Jesus Himself. In some passages this may be the case, since Jesus is the Son of Man and He did ascend in the clouds. But in other passages, it seems that it is the second ascension, that of the saints, that is in view. We shall conclude this chapter by examining these passages.</p>

<p>An atheist recently declared to me that a cumulative reading of the Bible makes no sense, since the Bible is not a single book but an anthology. I agree, but this &#8220;anthology&#8221; is indeed a single work because it was compiled by God. Without that foundation, the significance of much of its detail appears redundant. A good example is the wise men from the east in Matthew 2.</p>
<p><span id="more-13687"></span>One of James B. Jordan&#8217;s greatest contributions is his highlighting of the period from the exile to Christ as a unique period in Bible history. While most commentators see this half-millennium as a time of unfulfilled promises and oppression, Jordan observes that this was a time of preparation for the Gospel, and Israel was given a special ministry. [1]</p>
<p>Due to the failure of Israel&#8217;s kings, God put the nation through a death-and-resurrection, elevating his people to a higher court, a Gentile one. The Jews served God as a nation of prophets throughout the <em>oikoumene</em> (a &#8220;household&#8221; of nations), teaching the Gentiles through the ministry of the synagogues (Acts 15:12).</p>
<p>This new &#8220;social architecture&#8221; is set up in the book of Daniel. The thrones of the ancient kings, including that of Solomon, were often surrounded by beasts (a theme we can trace back to Genesis 1-2). The four beast empires in Daniel 7 are earthly counterparts of the four cherubim guarding God&#8217;s throne in heaven, preparing the earth for the coming of the heavenly King. Just as the Bronze Altar symbolized the Land of Israel, these four beasts correspond to the &#8220;higher court&#8221; of the four-horned Golden Incense Altar in the court of heaven, the place where &#8220;the sons of God,&#8221; His courtly advisors, minister to Him.</p>
<p>These heavenly beasts are miraculous hybrids of earthly animals, picturing the ability of the Spirit to unite things which cannot be united naturally, such as Jew and Gentile. You might remember that Nebuchadnezzar himself was transformed into a combination of &#8220;bird and beast&#8221; as a symbol of the temporary Covenant curse sent to discipline him. These &#8220;heavenly&#8221; cherubim are all Land animals which walk on water. They ascend out of the sea as the Land does. Their role was to &#8220;surround&#8221; Israel, to guard God&#8217;s people until Messiah.</p>
<blockquote><p>Daniel declared, “I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea. And four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. The first was like a lion and had eagles&#8217; wings. (Daniel 7:2-3)</p></blockquote>
<p>As Jordan observes, one by one, each of these guardian &#8220;bulldogs&#8221; turned bad and was replaced overnight. The final guardian was Rome, and we see Roman authorities protecting Christians from Jewish persecution in the book of Acts.</p>
<p>What does all of this background mean for Matthew 2?</p>
<p>This &#8220;Restoration Covenant&#8221; era began with young Jews taken as captives for training by the Chaldeans, the religious leaders of the Babylonian region. The book of Daniel sets them up as characters similar to those in Pharaoh&#8217;s court who opposed Moses. Daniel not only trumps their skill but ends up ruling them. He was taken captive to be taught, but rather than seeking their power, he humbled himself and became the teacher.</p>
<p>Since Daniel ruled the wise men, he redeemed them from pagan star gazing, a practice condemned by God because only He can interpret the stars, and He does so only to His prophets (Genesis 15:5; 22:17; 37:9, Deuteronomy 1:10; 4:19; 28:62, Judges 5:20; Isaiah 14:13; Jude 1:13; Revelation 1:16). Daniel was such a prophet, and he led these Gentiles to the truth concerning the stars. Stars are signs of the sons of God, those who are destined to ascend and rule the heavens.</p>
<p>Moreover, instead of seeking wisdom from the created heavens, the wise men now understood that &#8220;there is a God in heaven&#8221; who reveals such secrets. Daniel&#8217;s first resort after Nebuchadnezzar&#8217;s fury was the following advice to his brothers:</p>
<blockquote><p>Then Daniel went to his house and made the matter known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions, and told them to seek mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and his companions might not be destroyed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. (Daniel 2:17-18)</p></blockquote>
<p>When summoned before the king, Daniel was as fearless concerning his testimony to the true God as he was in chapter 1.</p>
<blockquote><p>Daniel answered the king and said, “No wise men, enchanters, magicians, or astrologers can show to the king the mystery that the king has asked, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. (Daniel 2:27-28)</p></blockquote>
<p>It is unlikely that these events would have been forgotten, especially by the Chaldeans. This intervention by Daniel was a game changer. Indeed, it was remembered by the queen many decades later (Daniel 5:10-12), who advised that Daniel be called upon to interpret the handwriting on the wall for Belshazzar.</p>
<p>So, this era began with young Jews traveling to Babylon. Matthew begins with a delegation of wise men from the east who, it seems, were now far more enamored with the God of heaven than with the heavens themselves, and far more familiar with the Hebrew Scriptures than Herod and the rulers of Jerusalem. They would have known of Balaam&#8217;s prophecy concerning the star of Jacob (Numbers 24:15-19), and also the timing of the coming of the Messiah from Daniel&#8217;s &#8220;70 weeks&#8221; prophecy (Daniel 9). The irony of the fact that this infant king was a surprise to the rulers of Jerusalem, who seemed to have no reliable prophets in their employ, would not have been lost on Matthew&#8217;s first readers. It is also the arrival of the wise men which sets the kingdom of the Herods against the kingdom of heaven. It was their testimony to Herod which brought about the massacre of the innocents, an act which would have been a sign to all true Israelites that the redemption prefigured for many centuries was finally drawing near.</p>
<p>The wise men from the east understood the nature of true kingdom. It was not in the study of the stars but in the knowledge of the one who made the stars &#8220;for signs and for seasons, and for days and years,&#8221; to be &#8220;lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth” (Genesis 1:14-15)  Daniel is bookended by wise men, but the wise men at the beginning work for Nebuchadnezzar, and the wise men at the end work for God:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. But you, Daniel, shut up the words and seal the book, until the time of the end.&#8221; (Daniel 12:3-4)</p></blockquote>
<p>In Matthew, the time of the end, the last days (of Israel and the Old Covenant) was at hand, only one generation away. In Revelation, the book of Daniel is unsealed by the Lamb at His ascension, and the curses of Moses fall upon the Land for the last time. John&#8217;s prophecy describes the corruption of the fourth beast (under Nero), its &#8220;decommissioning,&#8221; and the destruction of the adulterous city of Jerusalem (Egypt, Sodom, Babylon) after the jealous inspection of the apostles&#8217; cup (Numbers 5), all completed by AD70. The dominion of the &#8220;beasts&#8221; was superseded by the empire of The Man, following the pattern laid down on Day 6 in Genesis 1. [2]</p>
<p>The appearance of the Chaldeans is thus the beginning of the end. While those from the east were bringing their glory into the kingdom, the Herods were behaving like the sons of Joktan, the Shemites who &#8220;journeyed from the east&#8221; but ended up compromising with Nimrod&#8217;s Babel project, seeking a name for themselves rather than seeking God (Genesis 10-11:9).</p>
<p>Matthew&#8217;s narrative begins with wise men who were &#8220;angels&#8221; from the courts of earthly kings, guardians who had protected Israel until she gave birth to the promised One. They remembered Daniel of the tribe of Judah, the man without a kingdom who was showered with gifts:</p>
<blockquote><p>Then the king gave Daniel high honors and many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon and chief prefect over all the wise men of Babylon. (Daniel 1:48)</p></blockquote>
<p>Thanks to Daniel, they were not like the wise men of Nebuchadnezzar:</p>
<blockquote><p>The Chaldeans answered the king and said, “There is not a man on earth who can meet the king&#8217;s demand, for no great and powerful king has asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or Chaldean. The thing that the king asks is difficult, and no one can show it to the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.” (Daniel 2:10-11)</p></blockquote>
<p>Now that they worshiped the God of heaven, He was not only pleased to speak to them in dreams as He did to Daniel, He was pleased to meet them in person, as a man on earth, a God who now dwelt in flesh.</p>

<p>This brings us to the New Testament, and the final years of the Mosaic Law. Jesus was dealing with the house of Israel but also with Gentiles, as a precursor to the ministry of the apostles. His ministry, like that of Moses, included the appearance of the glory cloud at significant moments. Through Jesus&#8217; atonement for sin, Israel was about to enter into God&#8217;s rest. This time, it was the heavenly country perceived by all the saints, not a temporary house of branches like Canaan. However, this Feast of Clouds <em>would</em> require temporary shelters to become &#8220;houses of fire,&#8221; as a witness to the glory of God in His people.</p>
<p>The first sign was the Day of Pentecost. A single house was filled with a mighty, rushing wind, signalling the presence of God, just as His presence moved into the Tabernacle and Solomon&#8217;s Temple once His instructions had been obeyed. The Spirit anointed human lampstands with oil and tongues of fire measured out Yahweh&#8217;s architecture not in gold or silver (Acts 3:6) but in human character restored to health.</p>
<blockquote><p>In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. And leaping up he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. (Acts 3:6-8)</p></blockquote>
<p>However, this Pentecostal house was but a single house. A greater sign was required to indicate that the third promise to Abraham was finally being fulfilled: the blessing to all nations. After Pentecost, Acts records four events where entire households were visited by God. These correspond to the four &#8220;Altar horn&#8221; corners of the Land, whose territory was later expanded into four Gentile beasts as guardian cherubim around God&#8217;s throne. It appears that they correspond these four Gentile empires, but also to the four gospels, which are the horsemen of the apocalypse. Now that Christ had ascended, the four horns of atonement had become four winds of the Spirit.</p>
<div style="padding-left: 30px;"><em><strong>Creation</strong> (Genesis &#8211; Light &#8211; Ark of the Testimony)</em> Peter sees a vision of <strong>animals</strong> let down from heaven, in a vision on the roof of the house of Cornelius, a devout Gentile &#8220;who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God.&#8221; (Babylon, the conversion of Nebuchadnezzar)</div>
<div style="padding-left: 60px;"><em><strong>Division</strong></em> <em>(Exodus &#8211; Waters &#8211; Temple Veil)</em> On the Sabbath, by the river in Philippi, Lydia (a seller of <strong>purple</strong>, signifying the Veil), is converted and her entire household is baptized. <div style="padding-left: 90px;"><em><strong>Ascension</strong> (Leviticus &#8211; Land &amp; Fruits &#8211; Altar and Table)</em> Paul and Silas are beaten for destroying the &#8220;hope of gain&#8221; of some fortune tellers, and thrown into prison. After a miracle, the jailer calls for &#8220;lights.&#8221; All who were in his house heard the Word, all believed, and all were baptized. &#8220;Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them.&#8221; (Greece, the witness of Daniel leads to peace with Alexander) [1]</div>
<div style="padding-left: 120px;"><em><strong>Testing</strong> (Numbers &#8211; Ruling Lights &#8211; Lampstand)</em> Paul tells unbelieving Jews that their blood is on their own heads. He stays with Justus, a Gentile whose house is next to a synagogue ruled by one Crispus, who &#8220;believed in the Lord, together with his entire household. And many of the Corinthians hearing Paul believed and were baptized.&#8221; (Rome, the house of the Jew and the house of the Gentile united in the kingdom of Christ) [2]</div>
<p>This final &#8220;household&#8221; sign is also the point at which Paul completes his official witness to Jewish synagogues. Maintaining their allegiance to Herodian worship, they have become houses filled with demons, strange fire. At <em>Maturity</em>, the Bible Matrix pattern moves from head to body, from Israel to the nations, from heaven to the filling of the sky and the sea.</p>
<p>These &#8220;household conversions&#8221; were clearly not the norm, because the fact that <em>all believed</em> before they were baptized is specifically mentioned in three of the four instances. (The fact that it is not mentioned in the case of Lydia is beside the point, since Acts makes clear what were the qualifications for baptism, and it was not membership in a believing household.)</p>
<p>Moreover, the normal effect of the Gospel was a house <em>divided</em>. Jesus had stated that the Gospel would be a sword: &#8220;&#8230;a man&#8217;s enemies will be those of his own household.&#8221; (Matthew 10:36) To claim that these miraculous events are the norm to support an unbiblical agenda is akin to claiming that the apostolic gifts continued unabated after the destruction of the Temple (which was also heralded with miraculous signs), or that all babies in the womb are filled with the Spirit as was John the Baptist. If a signpost is the norm, it isn&#8217;t a signpost. It&#8217;s a fencepost.</p>
<p>So, what was the purpose of these four &#8220;household&#8221; events?</p>
<p>The movement in each is from a faithful household head who believes to an entire body of believers (including family members and servants), just like the initial &#8220;house-filling&#8221; of Pentecost was being measured out &#8220;architecturally&#8221; across the empire. Each event also incorporates a Jewish witness and Gentile &#8220;sponsors,&#8221; Graeco-Romans who bring their glory into the Church. The first and last are <em>vindications of prior belief</em> of entire households (Day 1 and Day 4), and the other two are <em>conversions</em> of entire households.</p>
<p>These believing households were four horns which put the old Israel, the Jewish rulers who rejected Pentecost, on the Altar, ready for the fires of the Roman armies.</p>
<p>These believing households were also four compass points on a new Israel, four Tabernacles at an empire-wide Feast of Clouds. They were a Pentecostal sign to the Jews that their Abrahamic ministry to the nations had been fulfilled. The transformation of these signature Gentile households into &#8220;booths&#8221; meant condemnation for Herod&#8217;s &#8220;Tabernacle.&#8221; As it was with Peter&#8217;s speech on the Day of Pentecost, and the miraculous apostolic gifts, these new hybrid (mixture) houses were a warning to Jews during the &#8220;overlap&#8221; of Covenant administrations between AD30-70. This was the final stage of the Abrahamic Covenant before it was finished. It could at last be seen that all of Israel&#8217;s history was prefigured in her festal calendar (see <em>Bible Matrix</em>).</p>
<p>We don&#8217;t hear about household conversions after Acts 18. It was an &#8220;Abrahamic&#8221; sign, but the end of Abraham, not a new beginning. Israel was finally purified, the ungodliness banished from Jacob (Romans 11:27) and she had completed her ministry. The only &#8220;household of faith&#8221; mentioned after this is the gathering of believers.</p>

<p>So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God&#8230; (Ephesians 2:19)</p></blockquote>
<p>As Revelation 2 shows us, every Church is a household with its own fire, a Lampstand de-centralized and able to multiply across the world. But these lamps are trimmed and oiled by Jesus, who judges them first, nipping their sins in the bud, and then judges the house where they were allowed to become full grown.</p>
<blockquote><p>For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? (1 Peter 4:17)</p></blockquote>
<p>The Black Sabbaths were over for everyone except the old tent of God, whose priests and kings had kindled a strange fire and become a new Egypt. She would lose her lampstand be burned with fire. The gloom of utter darkness had been reserved for her wandering stars. The day had dawned and the entire world was now filled with light. And all Jerusalem, once the Abrahamic navel of the world, was a barren womb shrouded in the darkness of an empty tomb.</p>

<p>“And when he (the High Priest) understood that he (Alexander the Great) was not far from the city (Jerusalem), he (the High Priest) went out in procession with the priests and the multitude of citizens. The procession was venerable, and the manner of it different from that of other nations … and when the Phoenicians and the Chaldeans that followed him (Alexander the Great), thought that they should have liberty to plunder the city, and torment the high priest to death, which the king’s displeasure fairly promised them, the very reverse of it happened; for Alexander, when he (Alexander the Great) saw the multitude at a distance, in white garments, while the priests stood clothed in fine linen, and the high priest in purple and scarlet clothing, with his miter on his head, having the golden plate whereon the name of G-d was engraved, he (Alexander the Great) approached by himself, and adored that name (the name of G-d), and first saluted the high priest. However, Parmenio alone went up to him (Alexander the Great) and asked him how it came to pass that, when all others adored him, he should adore the high priest of the Jews? To whom he replied, “I did not adore him, but that G-d who hath honored him with his high-priesthood; for I saw this very person in a dream, in this very habit (high priestly garment), when I was at Dios in Macedonia, who, when I was considering with myself, how I might obtain the dominion of Asia, exhorted me to make no delay, but boldly to pass over the sea thither, for that he (G-d) would conduct my army, and would give me the dominion over the Persians; whence it is, that having seen no other in that habit (high priestly garment), and now seeing this person in it, and remembering that vision, and the exhortation which I had in my dream, I believe that I bring this army under the divine conduct, and shall therewith conquer Darius, and destroy the power of the Persians, and that all things will succeed according to what is in my own mind.”</p>
<p>There is a tradition that says when the high priest met Alexander the Great outside Jerusalem that he took with him the book of Daniel and showed Alexander the prophecy concerning him.
