50 Failed Predictions? – #5

21. The New Covenant is still not established, because Christians need teaching. Jer. 31: 34.

The Jeremiah passage is actually not referring to the first century, but to the Restoration Covenant. Every death-and-resurrection of Israel starts with law on stone and ends with law on flesh, ie. law incarnate. See Jeremiah was a Bullfrog? The writer of Hebrews is simply saying, “It’s happening again one last time!”

22. The New Covenant is still not established, for the holy nation was (according to preterists ) destroyed (Jer. 31: 35-37).

Thus says the LORD, Who gives the sun for a light by day, The ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night, Who disturbs the sea, And its waves roar (The LORD of hosts [is] His name): ”If those ordinances depart From before Me, says the LORD, Then the seed of Israel shall also cease From being a nation before Me forever.” Thus says the LORD: “If heaven above can be measured, And the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel For all that they have done, says the LORD.

This puts this passage firmly within the Exile/Restoration history. The Lord is promising that they will return. “All that they have done” refers to their pre-exile idolatries and treaties. This is not rocket science. This is basic “first audience” stuff. Yes, it applies to Israel—Davidic Israel! An Israel that is no more.

23. The New Covenant is still not established, for according to preterists the holy city was thrown down for ever (Jer. 31: 40).

There’s no Hebrew word for “forever.” And that new Jerusalem (Nehemiah’s) was a type of the current New Jerusalem.

24. The armies surrounding Jerusalem were not destroyed in A.D. 70. (see Zech. 14: 3).

This verse is within a “Trumpets” cycle of a large 7×7 poetic oracle. (See page 282 and the nifty diagram on 283 of your copy of Totus Christus). Here, old Jerusalem is Jericho. But it is the “Canaanite” Jews being surrounded by the Gentile nations of the oikoumene, the territory within which she was commissioned to be a witness after the captivity. She failed to be a river of life, so the Lord pushed her under the Sea.

The wasted eyes and tongues of the unfaithful simply refers to the loss of sound judgment, just as Isaac’s and Eli’s and Samson’s and Zedekiah’s did. We could also through John’s dad Zechariah and the healed mutes in there. Those who thought they “controlled” the power of the Ark didn’t figure on the Covenant curses. They were to be incarnate word. Since they refused, they would be no word at all.

25. Christ never returned the Mount of Olives from whence He ascended (Zech. 14: 4).

The temporary “flying Tabernacle” of the New Covenant church that Paul had built was about to land. Jesus’ feet are the Landing Gear, the pillars that the Temple had but the Tabernacle did not: priest and king. Moses ruled priests and Elijah ruled kings. The apostles are presented as these two witnesses, Elijah and Moses, speaking the truth to power, flanking Jesus as Abraham looking down over Jerusalem as Sodom. See The Peskiest Chapter in the Bible and Splitting Rocks. It is highly structured imagery, but literal nonetheless. At this point in history, all of the OT symbols were fulfilled in breathing, walking, flesh and blood, ie., IN PEOPLE. The Temple was made of living stones.

Judah, the old Land, was ripped in two, repeating the sacrifices of Abram. It was both the end and the transfiguration of the Abrahamic Covenant. See Passover and Pass-through. It’s not hard to intepret once we idenitify the repeating patterns. See also End of the Abrahamic Rift.
