Thorn in the Flesh

or Crops and Creeps

malificent“And because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given unto me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, in order to keep me from exalting myself. Concerning this I entreated the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.’ Most gladly, then, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Thus, I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.” —2 Cor. 12:7-10

What was Paul’s thorn in the flesh? Theories abound, from a bad temper, to bowlegs, to eye trouble and even epilepsy. Why is it that so many commentators fail to check their concordances for “previous.” These days, with Bible wordsearch software, we have no excuse.

Bible Matrix Update

Dr Leithart has very kindly written a foreword for Bible Matrix, which is a bare-bones-basic version of Totus Christus. It was a big ask, considering we have never met, but he has written the following. I hope his brave endorsement encourages you to look out for it when it becomes available. Stay tuned for updates.

Wandering Stars

The astral bodies signified those who are glorified and exalted. While this is true of all the saints, it is also true of all human rulers as well. Revelation 1:20 says that the rulers of the church are like stars, and Jude 13 says that apostate teachers are “wandering stars.” —James B. Jordan, Through New Eyes, p. 55.

Jude’s epistle follows the themes of the Bible matrix. In Adam’s pattern, the first half (forming) was good, but he forfeited the glories of the last half (filling). Like God, he was to create with a faithful Covenant word. His failure made him a false prophet, one who cries “peace, peace” when Leviathan is at the gate.

50 Failed Predictions? - #8

iloveezra

36. Acording to Preterists, all those left in Jerusalem were reckoned unholy. But see Isaiah 4:3-4.

Simple answer: Isaiah 4 refers to the “new Jerusalem” of Ezra and Nehemiah. But I’m going to use this as an opportunity to analyse Isaiah 4 and its context. This stuff blows me away.

The Sons of God in Job 38

snowangel

In Envy and the Sons of God, I wrote:

…those with the title “the sons of God” in Job were not angels but priestly, mediatorial men (an observation I have heard from Gary DeMar). Satan envied them, accused them, as he always does. They are Adams in the garden, Covenant heads, and he hates them. Job was a priest-king.

DeMar has also just published an article on Job in the last few days that deals with the crazy angel/human hybrid Nephilim theory, and of necessity covers the identity of the sons of God.

Baptism of Fire

pentecost-duccio

“I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Matthew 3:11

I remember a scene from X Files where they printed out a binary code and laid the pages out on the floor. When viewed from a distance the ones and zeros made the image of a face. There was a similar scene in one of the Indiana Jones movies, where there was a search for a secret passage and it turned out to be a large X on the floor when viewed from above. This is just my view, but it seems a lot of theologians spend a great deal of time walking in circles in the jungle, lost in the details of prooftexts when we have Old Testament “Google maps” at our fingertips.

Feedback, the Matrix, and Vampires

tcstack.
Other than the reviews link at right, and some comments here, I did start a blog for those reading Totus Christus to leave feedback (there is also a link at right under Links tab). If your comments are helpful I will repost them here. So far, people either shake their head in disgust or tell me one chapter was worth the cost of the book (thanks Kelby and Theron!)

If you haven’t ordered one but are thinking about it, don’t delay too long. Once this review edition is gone it might be a while before a final is available.

In the mean time, the simpler Bible Matrix should be available in the U.S. and on Amazon some time during the next 6 months, whether I self-publish (with someone like Thomas Nelson’s Westbow Press) or I manage to convince a real one. Here’s the working cover and blurb…

Wizards that Peep and Mutter

samuelappears-wblake

“And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?”   Isaiah 8:19

I remember reading this verse for the first time in the KJV and wondering what it was exactly that the wizards were peeping at!

One for the Regulars

or The Song of Herod… not!

Matthew 2:1-4

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king,

……..behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,

…………….saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?

……………………For we have seen His star in the East
……………………and have come to worship Him.”

…………….When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled,

……..and all Jerusalem with him.

And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
